Visocchi’s in Broughty Ferry scoops top ice-cream prize

Broughty Ferry café wins The Waverley Golden Cone Award

Visocchi’s on Gray Street has been announced as Scotland’s favourite ice-cream shop. The Broughty Ferry business scooped the top prize in The Waverley Golden Cone awards, a competition run by the no1 cone and wafer manufacturer The Waverley Bakery and the Sunday Mail newspaper.

Visscohi’s beat hundreds of other ice-cream hot spots across Scotland to be awarded The Golden Cone Award after Sunday Mail readers sent in their votes and stories about their favourite place to enjoy ice-cream.

A shortlist of the top 12 shops was announced in the Sunday Mail on 12 May and it was up to a panel of judges including River City star Libby McArthur and one of the original members of The Waverley Bakery Anthony Zaccardelli who decided that Vissochi’s should be top of the shops.

Marco Caira of Visocchi’s said, “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the support we have received from our customers and it is them who have helped us win The Waverley Golden Cone Award. Our customers make Visocchi’s what it is and we are so grateful to every single person who voted.

“We ask our customers what they want and we aim to deliver it for them, whether that be a new flavour of ice-cream or which type of car we should use for our delivery service.

“It really does mean so much to my family to receive recognition for all the hard work we’ve put in over the years. Visocchi’s is a true family business and we all pull together to deliver what we think is a great service to our customers.”

Nadia Millar, managing director of The Waverley Bakery said: “The campaign has been a massive success and I am delighted by the number of people who took the time to send in their votes and stories for their favourite ice-cream shop. It really highlights Scotland’s love for ice-cream.

I’m sure it was an extremely tough decision for the judges as there are so many fantastic ice-cream parlours out there, but I am delighted for Visocchi’s and I hope that they reap the rewards with hundreds of customers flocking to their shop.”

The Golden Cone Awards ‘licked off’ on April and ran for seven weeks.  Runners up in the competition were:

  • Allan Water Café, Bridge of Allan
  • Janettas, St Andrews
  • Valentinis, Giffnock
